UK IMMIGRATION FROM NOVEMBER 2010 ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIRMENT FOR SPOUSES AND PARTNERS 

If you want to enter or remain in the UK as a spouse or partner to someone who lived in the UK you will from 29 November 2010 to confirm that your English to a high enough level so that you can both speak and understand English. This will involve you in the following cases:
  • You are in a relationship with someone who is a British citizen or have permanent residence in Britain.
  • You want to apply as a spouse, civil partner, fiance (e), proposed civil partner, unmarried or same sex partners.
  • If you are a citizen of a country outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland. This European Economic Area comprises the entire European Union as well as some other countries.
UK immigration language requirement changes
If you are not nationals of a majority English-speaking country, you must meet the following requirements:
  • You must pass an acceptable English tests at an approved test provider.
  • You must demonstrate a basic level of English ability to speak and listen at Level A1 of the Common
  • European Framework of Reference. Usually it is supposed to require 40-50 hours of instruction for most. You have to understand simple everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You do not need to demonstrate ability in English in reading and writing.
  • You must pay the costs of the English language test yourself. The cost of the test will vary greatly depending on the supplier and the country.
The list of most English-speaking countries, whose citizens do not take the test are below:
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Canada
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • United States
To avoid this new requirement, you should ensure that your application is submitted before 29 November 2010. If you are not from a majority English-speaking country after that date you must pay for teaching English and take a test.
